Choosing the right colour ribbon

As a Montreal ribbon company, we at FinerRibbon have made every effort to accurately display the colours of our ribbon in our online ribbon store. However, there is always the fact that the computer screen settings of our clients may not be calibrated properly and so the colours may not be showing correctly at their side. Thus, there is a chance that the satin ribbon they order may not be the exact shade they intended to order.

We have several easy solutions for this which we think helps our clients greatly with no hassle at all.

The first option is of course our refund/exchange policy which can be viewed by clicking here. We offer an unconditional exchange or refund on any of our ribbon as long as the full roll has not been used. Our clients can simply mail us back the merchandise and we will exchange it for them or issue a refund no questions asked. In the case of exchanges, it would be very helpful if a swatch of their textile or paper is included so that we can match the colour correctly for them.

Another option is for our clients to mail us a swatch of their material before purchase, after which we will happily call or email them and inform them of the best matching ribbon colour. This way our clients can place their order confidently knowing that the merchandise they will receive is guaranteed to match the colour of their material thanks to our ribbon colour matching service.

A third option is to order a sample swatch of any of our ribbon and this can be done by selected “Sample Swatch” from any of our individual ribbon pages – by going to the ribbon page of their choice and selecting “Sample Swatch” from the Choose Roll Size box. After which we will mail a sample swatch of that ribbon for a nominal fee.

Indeed, we are a Canada ribbon company but with the above options, we make sure that clients from any country in the world are able to find the satin, grosgrain, or organza ribbon they need at www.finerribbon.com easily and of course always at the best prices.

Personalized ribbon for all markets

We deal with numerous inquiries on a daily basis which ask: “Does FinerRibbon offer personalized ribbon for sale to international clients?”

The short answer is of course, yes! Actually there is no long answer :-) the plain fact is that we offer our ribbon for sale to all countries of the world.

When FinerRibbon opened its doors for business, naturally our primary aim was to first create a strong foot hold as a reputable and reliable personalized ribbon company in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. From there on we increased our exposure through our satin ribbon website to all provinces of Canada. During this period, we kept on experimenting with different layouts and means to ensure that the FinerRibbon website was easily understandable and accurately displayed our products in such a way that even non-English speaking clients would be able to easily navigate the site and make a purchase according to their satin, grosgrain, chiffon, or personalized ribbon needs.

The purpose of the FinerRibbon website is not to boast about the wide range of personalized ribbon options that we offer, rather it is there to present them to our clients. We showcase our satin ribbon collection in an comfortable manner where the colours are displayed accurately without bothering our clients with useless information on how good we are, but rather how good of a service we can be to them.

Thus, as a personalized ribbon company in Montreal, we are happy to offer our service and support to both our local market as well as our international clients. We strive to offer the best customer service and we’re proud to say that we are succeeding in that as evidence from the testimonials our clients give us, some of which we’ve displayed on the FinerRibbon testimonial page. We are able to offer personalized ribbon printed in any language and we look forward to helping you with your next project!

Personalized ribbon

We are extremely happy to have received the following glowing review from La Mode Francaise magazine (translated):

A very popular item with decorating projects is personalized ribbon – also known as printed ribbon.

Very simply, personalized ribbon is the process of having custom artwork or a phrase printed on satin, grosgrain, or organza ribbon. The printing process can be either:

  • Off-set printing: The process of transferring the ink on the ribbon by a rotary drum.
  • Hot-stamping: The process of transferring the ink on the ribbon by a hot metal plate pressing an ink foil on the ribbon.
  • This is why personalized ribbon is very popular with a variety of decorating projects; whether it’s crafts, bridal decorations, birthdays or even product advertising, personalized ribbon is a great way for the decorator to send out a special message with the decorations.

When used for bridal decorations, for example, the bride (or groom for that matter) can have personalized ribbon with their names and wedding date printed on satin or grosgrain ribbon. A good example of this would be something like “John & Jane ~ May 15, 2010″ printed repeatedly on the ribbon. The print would be separated by a print interval of x amount of inches so that the ribbon may also be cut and tied to bows or for whatever length of ribbon the decorating project requires.

Similarly, personalized ribbon can also be used very effectively for gift wrapping, birthdays, holidays, baptisms… Quite simply any event you can think of!

Another very effective use of personalized ribbon is for product advertising and corporate branding; Every time we go to a mall and browse through the perfume and cosmetics stands, we can’t help but notice how beautifully several perfume and cosmetics products are all bundled together in a cellophane package and tied with a neat bow at the top with personalized ribbon which has the perfume or cosmetics brand printed on it. This makes for very effective advertising and product marketing which, based on the amount of money spent on perfumes and cosmetics in our household, is very effective indeed!

So, this leads to the inevitable questions: What is the difference between off-set and hot-stamping personalized and is there a difference in quality between these two different methods? More simply put, which printing method is best for which use of personalized ribbon?

The answer is very simple. With off-set printed personalized ribbon, you will not have any metallic colors such as metallic (also known as glossy) silver or metallic gold. All colors printed with off-set printing are matte colors, on the other hand though, off-set printing is – when a special ink is used – is washable and can be used with garments as well. Hot-stamped personalized ribbon is not washable and less robust than off-set printing in the sense that if handled too much (such as attempting to tie a bow with the same piece of ribbon more than a few times) the ink will peel off the ribbon. This is specially true if the hot-stamp is not done the correct way. The advantage of hot-stamp printing though is that it will allow for the printing of metallic and shiny colors, such as metallic gold and metallic silver among other colors, on the ribbon.

So, how can we choose a reliable company for personalized ribbon?

Be sure to choose a company that actually does the printing and the artwork preparation in-house. This way, the client will be able to work directly with the print technician rather than a middle man.

The best company that I’ve worked with for personalized ribbon so far is without a doubt FinerRibbon. I don’t say this lightly; the level of service along with the quality of their merchandise should very well be the envy of other companies.

The FinerRibbon personalized ribbon service offers probably the widest color range for both ink colors as well as ribbon colors in a variety of sizes. Their personalized ribbon order page (click on this link to view) allows the client to order personalized ribbon through a very easy to use interface quite efficiently and with absolutely any custom artwork they need.

The best things about personalized ribbon from FinerRibbon.com are exactly what every client would need but which almost no other ribbon printing company offers: 1) No matter what print color you choose (metallic or non-metallic), the ink will not smudge, peel off or fade in any way no matter how many times the ribbon is handled. This is such a relief for decorating users because no matter how much the ribbon is handled, it will always look top notch. Another good thing about FinerRibbon.com is that they seem to be using large plates on their printing machines. What does this mean? Quite simply that they are able to print longer artworks than other ribbon printing companies do. So let’s say the client would want to print, “Happy Birthday Jane ~ Sweet Sixteen ~ May 15, 2010″ and add a nice cake emblem with it, most printing companies will not be able to print such a long phrase, but it’s not a problem with FinerRibbon. The third advantage that they offer – and this is the best – is the fact that they do not require any minimum order quantities for personalized ribbon orders. Every other company we tested required at least 5 or 10 rolls plus a one time “plate charge”, but with FinerRibbon they are able to take orders as small as 1 roll which is perfect for small weddings or birthdays, and they don’t charge any additional fees for plates or set-ups.

In conclusion, personalized ribbon is a great way to enhance any decorating project and – with the right color combination – make it look trendy and elegant in an inexpensive way. Just make sure to choose a color combination that goes well with your project ;-) .

    Knowing your ribbon

Choosing the right ribbon for decorating or gift-wrapping projects makes all the difference between a memorable presentation and a “tear the wrapper off” packaging. If you’ve ever admired a beautiful packaging or lingered over the ribbon display stand at your local Hallmark store, then you probably know first hand the attraction beautiful ribbon has.

There are literally millions of designs and colors – not to mention the material they’re made from – of ribbon. However, in spite of this wide range of styles, they can be sorted down to a few general categories. It is important to note though that some ribbons are difficult to classify due to the fact that they share at least two or more different characteristics. This doesn’t mean that they would not be appropriate for packaging or decorating projects, quite the contrary, but in cases of “hybrid” ribbons such as these, all you would need to do is make sure that the ribbon is an appropriate one for your project.

Moving on to the general categories of ribbon:

  • Satin Ribbon: This ribbon is the one most people associate with when they hear the word “ribbon”. Characterized with a smooth, silky, and shiny finish on one side and a matte finish on the other side (considered to be the “back” side) , you’ll probably find satin ribbon to have the widest range of colors and sizes. This ribbon is used for both decorating and garments. A good guide for satin ribbon colors and sizes can be found here.
  • Brocade Ribbon: This wide and heavyweight ribbon is distinguished by repeated decorative motifs. Brocade ribbon is woven, and usually very rich in jewel tones. Brocade ribbon is very popular for home decorating projects and can usually be purchased by the yard rather than per roll.
  • Double Faced Ribbon: Unlike satin ribbon, this ribbon has the same smooth, silky, and shiny finish on both sides. This ribbon is also used quite effectively with garments and packaging.
  • Feathered Edge Ribbon: This ribbon has the fibers along both edges of the ribbon pulled out into a consistent pattern of equal sized loops. The looped edges make the ribbon appear slightly wider than it is.
  • Organza Ribbon: Also known as Chiffon Ribbon, this ribbon is sheer – almost transparent. The wonderful thing about this ribbon is that the color shades change at different light angles.
  • Wire Edged Ribbon: This ribbon has thin wires woven into the edges of the ribbon (almost any kind of ribbon can be wire edged). Naturally the wires inside the edges are not visible. The greatest advantage of wired ribbon is that it can be shaped and hold a specific shape. The flip side though with this ribbon is that it is not washable at all – its usage is strictly decorative.
  • Plaid and Gingham Ribbon: This ribbon has the checkered pattern woven into the ribbon which makes the pattern visible on both sides.
  • Metallic Ribbon: This ribbon is created, quite obviously, with metallic threads covering all or just some parts of the ribbon.
  • Jacquard Ribbon: This ribbon has a repeated pattern woven through the length of the ribbon. This makes it a bit of a thick ribbon due to the numerous threads used to create the pattern. This ribbon is usually single faced.
  • Grosgrain Ribbon: Grosgrain ribbon is a robust ribbon that unlike satin ribbon, has a matte finish. Grosgrain ribbon is characterized by having vertical ridges running across the ribbon.
  • Velvet Ribbon: This ribbon has a soft velvet finish on one side and flat woven underside. Very elegant and more recently available in the market in a wider range of colors and sizes.
  • Personalized Ribbon: This ribbon has a custom or generic (such as polka dots) printed on it. Personalized Ribbon is usually made with satin, grosgrain, or organza ribbon.
  • All the above kinds of ribbon can be purchased at your local crafts store or a well established online ribbon store.
